About Damianitza

Our mission is to make premium wines that appeal to
cosmopolitan wine drinkers while reviving a venerable legacy
of winemaking in Bulgaria.

About Us

Nestled in the Struma River Valley in Southwest Bulgaria, Damianitza is a small winery dedicated to the production of quality wine. Our wines appeal to customers who share an appreciation for unique flavor and authentic taste. We excel in small-batch, handcrafted wines.
Our vineyards are located on the rolling hills surrounding the river valley. Shielded from the harsh winds of the North and open to the mild influence of the Mediterranean, the sunny terrain and its volcanic soils yield an exclusive fruit source for our wines. We take pride in allowing grapes to ripen to bring out peak flavors and structure.
Our wines’ distinctive personality comes from the Melnik Broad-Leaved Vine and the related Early Melnik Vine, both indigenous Bulgarian varieties unique to this viticultural region. Believed to have been brought over from Asia Minor by local Thracian tribes in Odyssean times, these varieties lend an intense yet refined taste to our wines. In addition, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc varieties, also grown in the region, enable us to produce superb wines of utmost complexity and balance.
Damianitza’s mission is to make premium wines that appeal to cosmopolitan wine drinkers while reviving a venerable legacy of winemaking in Bulgaria. The winery recently expanded its wine portfolio and now produces exquisite wine from Rubin grapes, an authentic Nebbiolo–Syrah crossing created in Bulgaria more than half a century ago and grown only in the country’s South-Central region.

Our History

The winery today is a dynamic modern facility employing advanced vinification techniques. Its precursor was established just before the Second World War and for over half a century produced wine drawing from the exquisite grape that grew in the pristine areas near Bulgaria’s Southern border. When it was purchased in 1997, as part of the country’s post-communist privatization process, the winery underwent a dramatic organizational and equipment overhaul to enable it to bring exclusive wines to domestic and international
customers. The winery is owned and operated by a young entrepreneur who took up the challenge to revive the country’s winemaking traditions and produce consistently superior wines.

Our Wines Around the World

Our wines are currently enjoyed by customers in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland and The United State, United Kingdom among others.

Jancis Robinson “Bulgaria wakes up”

Just in time for Bulgaria’s entry into the EU next year(2008), the wines get a whole lot better.

Damianitza continue to do a great job down in the far south west of the country where Melnik is the impressive local red variety. The Redark range sees mainly French oak, sometimes slightly too much of it, while the less expensive Uniqato range, of which the Uniqato Rosé 2005 made from lightly oaked Melnik is a standout, sees mainly Bulgarian oak, like so many Bulgarian wines. I asked another producer whether there were now any good Bulgarian coopers. “No,” he said rather too emphatically.

Uniqato Rubin 2005 is another good wine with a velvetiness that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, made from the scented Bulgarian 1940s crossing of Nebbiolo and Syrah. With a memorable name like that it could catch on.
