Decanter World Wine Awards

The Decanter World Wine Awards – the most influential wine competition in the world – attracted more entries this year than ever before. In total 9219 wines were entered, more than double the amount entered than when the competition launched just five years ago. Decanter’s reputation for its unique judging process has often caused the competition to be called ‘the ultimate terroir competition’. This year the judges, over 50 of whom flew in from overseas, were as rigorous as ever. Despite the large number of entries, the consistency in terms of medals awarded, was remarkable…Decanter World Wine Awards Chairman Steven Spurrier said ‘winning a silver medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards is the equivalent of winning a gold from other competitions. Our prestige goes before us.’
While terroir is celebrated, the consumer is paramount. Wines were judged this year in two price brackets again – under £10 and over £10.
As the world’s biggest and most respected wine media brand, Decanter manages to reach over 5 million consumers.
‘Today’s wine consumer has a genuine need for advice and guidance in choosing wine from the vast range on offer from all over the world,’ said Michael Hill Smith MW, Regional Chair for Australia. ‘Consumers trust Decanter, and it is this trust that underpins the continued success of the Decanter World Wine Awards’.

Vinalies Internationales

Held by the Union des Œnologues de France, the 2007 edition will bring together almost 3,000 samples from all the world’s wine regions. The task given to each panel of judges composed of 7 professionals (the rules set down by the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, the Union Internationale des Œnologues, and the Fédération Mondiale des Grands Concours Internationaux de Vins et Spiritueux require that each panel must include 2 French judges and 3 from other countries, while the President must be a French oenologist) is to give each sample a score and a tasting note. After the individual blind tasting, the President of the Panel records the notes in real time (using a computerized system) and, if necessary, there is a debate to come to a general consensus. It does happen that different palates with contrasting affinities may diverge radically in their appraisals.

A genuine trip around the world’s taste buds for the winegrowers taking part! Today, the Union des Œnologues de France is sure of one thing: faced with supermarket shelves offering an increasingly diversified, sometimes complex choice of wines, consumers are in search of signs and guarantees that they recognize. Our intention is that the prizes awarded at the Vinalies Internationales should bring added value to the winning wines. As professionals dedicated all year round to preparing vines, making and maturing wines, who could be better placed to judge and appraise wines on behalf of the consumer? Today, we are the guarantors of the traceability of your wines!

International Wine Challenge, London

Staging such a seamless two-week competition is no easy task: it requires a year of planning, and countless hours of physical and managerial labor to bring together the very best judges with the arduous task of tasting every single bottle of wine. Boasting more than 9,000 entries, the International Wine Challenge (IWC) has cemented its place as the best and biggest blind tasting in the world – and it only works through meticulous organization.

International Wine and Spirits Competition

The International Wine and Spirit Competition was founded in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. This standard is achieved through a rigorous two-stage judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical (chemical and microbiological) analysis that takes place at The Competition’s headquarters in Surrey, UK. To ensure perfect conditions, the premises include temperature-controlled cellars, a fully equipped independent laboratory for technical analysis, and three dedicated tasting rooms. In 2005 The Competition received approximately 5,000 entries from over 50 countries.

Chicago Eastern European Wine Challenge

One of the oldest and largest competitions in the United States, this event is held each May in the Finger Lakes region of New York, topping over 2,100 entries in recent years with wines from 16 countries and 34 states. The IEWC has earned a well-justified reputation for the quality of its organization, judgments and awards. Wines in any given flight may be entered from around the world. Judges are wine-knowledgeable professionals, media specialists, and winemakers who represent major east coast markets from Miami to Toronto. Bronze medals require a unanimous panel vote for bronze, so any winning medals in the IEWC are worthy of merit.
